Sea Turtle Emergencies
Are you interested in helping sea turtles and want to know how to report an unfortunate occurrence or if you are involved in an accident regarding a turtle? The following information will be helpful for you to consider. One of the first things you would do if you are involved in an accident is to contact the Sea Turtle Hospital 24 emergency hotline.
Plan Your Visit to the Hospital
If you aren’t directly involved with a turtle accident but happen to be enjoying the local beaches in Marathon, here are a few things you can look out for regarding sea turtles that may be in distress!
A sea turtle that is lethargically floating in the water could be a turtle that is sick or hurt. If you see a sea turtle struggling to dive or float, the sea turtle could have a damaged flipper preventing them from swimming correctly. You could encounter a sea turtle trapped in a fishing line, rope, netting, or plastic material. You could encounter a sea turtle with a damaged shell or flippers due to a boat collision. Also, keep a lookout for sea turtles that could have growths or tumors; these usually can be found on the flippers and eyes.
If you come across any of these scenarios or similar ones, you would immediately report the incident to the sea turtle hospital hotline. Sea turtles are very fragile and endangered and should only be handled if authorized by the FWC or The Turtle Hospital.

Tracking Sea Turtles
Would you like to keep up with the Sea turtles even more? They have rescued and rehabilitated several sea turtles at the hospital, and you can go to their website to check out how they have been doing since their release. How is that possible? Some of our releases have been fitted with a small transmitter that tracks the location of the rehabilitated turtle!
One rehabilitated turtle you can keep up with is Mr. T. An almost 200-pound loggerhead sea turtle was released Tuesday, May 7th, 2019, at Sombrero Beach in Marathon, Fla. This turtle had several surgeries to remove a fishhook. Mr. T., now fully recovered, was fitted with a small transmitter to track his whereabouts. You can find his last location by clicking the “Tracking Sea Turtles” tab. The transmitter will allow you to see the location of turtles for up to two years.
How You Can Help
Another great way sea turtle lovers can help is by donating to the cause. The sea turtle hospitals and rehabilitation centers would not exist without the kind and thoughtful support of individuals like you!
What other ways can you look out for the well-being of the sea turtles other than monetarily? One way is to reduce, reuse, and recycle. While this is important for the overall environment, it’s super essential for the well-being of the sea turtles too. Focus on buying products with less packaging. Buy reusable water bottles and reusable packaging for storing food. Avoiding single-use water bottles and plastics can reduce the possibility of the waste finding its way into the ocean and other bodies of water.
These types of single-use materials take time to break down in our ecosystem. These plastics are used for a minute and don’t decompose for over 500 years. The amount of waste in our local water supply is at an all-time high. We must do everything we can to decrease this.
While boating, it’s vital to be conscious of the sea life you are surrounded by in the water. A floating sea turtle can’t dive down to avoid an oncoming boat. Knowing your speed while boating and your surroundings will be vital in preventing an accident.
Another way to protect the turtles is properly disposing of your fishing line. When loose in the water, these lines can end up wrapped around a sea turtle. Keeping an eye out for lingering fishing lines in the water and taking them out can prevent an accident too. Monofilament fishing line takes up to 600 years to biodegrade and will most likely get caught in something if not disposed of properly. Recycling bins for these lines are placed on every fishing bridge, beach, and marina in the Florida Keys.
